Your data stays on your device.
Kanjii is built to be a calm, privacy‑respecting way to learn kanji. We don't collect personal data, run third‑party analytics, or serve ads. Because all the data described below is stored solely on your device and never transmitted to Kanjii, we do not have access to it and cannot retrieve, export, or delete it on your behalf.
What we store
- Preferences such as selected JLPT level and theme
- Daily streak status and notification reminder time
- Favorites, mastery progress, and your personal notes per kanji
These values are stored locally on your device using iOS UserDefaults. We use Apple's App Groups to share these preferences with the Kanjii widget so it can display the correct level and theme. None of this information is transmitted to our servers — we don't have any servers.
In‑app purchases
Subscriptions are processed by Apple via the App Store. We do not receive your payment information. We only read the purchase status provided by StoreKit to unlock Pro features on your device.
Notifications
Kanjii can schedule a daily local notification reminder at a time you choose. This does not use remote or push notifications, and no notification tokens are sent to a server.
Audio
Readings are spoken using the built‑in iOS text‑to‑speech voices on your device. No audio is recorded or uploaded.
Data sharing and tracking
We do not sell, rent, or share personal data. We don't collect personal identifiers, and we don't track you across apps or websites. Kanjii does not engage in tracking as defined by Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework — it does not link your activity to data from third parties for advertising, and it does not share device identifiers with data brokers. No ATT permission prompt is shown because no tracking occurs.
Website
The kanjii.net marketing site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare processes standard access logs (IP address, user‑agent, request path) as a sub‑processor for security and reliability; we do not access these logs. Fonts are self‑hosted; no third‑party requests are made by the site. No analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies are used.
Children
Kanjii is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, please contact support@kanjii.net — though note that all app data is stored locally on the child's device and is not received by us.
Your rights (EEA and UK users)
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK GDPR, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict the processing of, port, or object to the processing of your personal data, and to withdraw consent at any time.
Legal basis for processing: performance of a contract under Article 6(1)(b) (your App Store EULA and Kanjii Pro subscription) for purchase‑status checks; legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) for local preferences, streak tracking, and review scheduling.
Retention: data persists on your device until you delete it within the app or uninstall the app. Uninstalling removes all local data.
How to exercise rights: because all data lives on your device, you can exercise these rights directly — clear notes and favorites in the app, or uninstall to erase everything. We cannot retrieve, export, or delete data on your behalf because we never receive it.
Right to complain: EEA users may lodge a complaint with their national supervisory authority. The current list is maintained at edpb.europa.eu. UK users may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
California residents
Kanjii does not meet the thresholds of the California Consumer Privacy Act / California Privacy Rights Act (Cal. Civ. Code §1798.140) and does not sell or share personal information. California's "Shine the Light" law (Civ. Code §1798.83) does not apply because Kanjii has fewer than 20 employees. We do not respond to Global Privacy Control signals because we do not engage in conduct that would trigger them.
Governing law
This policy is governed by the laws of the State of Florida, United States, without regard to conflict‑of‑law principles. If any provision of this policy is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update this page and bump the "Last updated" date at the top. If a future feature requires new data practices, we'll document them here and in the app.
